Allergies, anyone?

Thomas turned one yesterday, and we learned that not only is he allergic to penicillin and sulfa drugs, but he's also allergic to something in his birthday cupcakes.

It's probably the food coloring in the icing, but it could also be eggs.

Based on things he's already eaten, I'm sure it's not milk, soy, or wheat.

But in thinking about it, I don't think he's ever had anything with eggs in it. Not even muffins or pancakes or bread.

Shortly after SMEARING the neon icing all over his face, we threw him in the bathtub.

Where I noticed the hives begin to form all over his face, especially around his eyes and mouth, where the icing was.

We gave him Benadryl and called the on-call nurse, as it was already 6:30 p.m. and his doctor's office was closed. We need to administer Benadryl round the clock every six hours until the hives have been gone for 12 hours, and we need to call his doctor on Monday.

I really hope it's the food coloring he's allergic to and not eggs. Boooooo

Today he woke up happy as a bug with no hives. Still. Boooooo

Cute pics!! And happy birthday!! I hope it's the food coloring too and not the eggs!! Has he had the chicken pox vaccine yet? That has eggs in it.. so if he was allergic to eggs, he probably would have reacted to that.

Another thing to consider is nut allergies. If the cupcakes were made out of a box mix, you should check the label for the possibility of the "made in a facility that may process things with nuts" label.

don't panic! the hives were just on his face, right? which makes me think it is a contact/skin issue. my kids get idiopathic hives a couple times a year from weird things. sometimes something (say, a soap) will cause a reaction, but only 1 out of 50 times. it's odd - but short-lived. good luck!

based on the icing completely covering like a mud mask.. i (being the Dr I am) believe it is the dye in the icing ;)
